Fennel
Commonly known as fennel, Foeniculum Vulgare is used to treat symptoms of slow digestion and intestinal dysbiosis, or a negative change in the composition of intestinal bacteria. These conditions can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, flatulence and constipation. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has found that Foeniculum Vulgare can be therapeutic in the treatment of digestive symptoms caused by bacterial imbalances and slow digestive transit.
Senna
In a 2010 clinical trial involving 20 patients with constipation, it was noted that senna infusions increased the subjects' daily number of bowel movements. They also reported an overall improvement in bowel function. No significant side effects were found, with the exception of a small reduction in blood potassium levels during the treatment period. The study concluded that senna is an effective laxative and a safe option for the treatment of constipation.
The cascara
Rhamnus Purshiana, also known as Cascara, has always been used to treat constipation and detoxify the colon. There are two main laxative components in Cascara, hydroxyanthracene glycosides (in particular cascarosides A, B, C and D) and emodin. Similar to senna, these stimulate intestinal activity.
Hydroxyanthracene glycosides stimulate intestinal movement by keeping water and electrolytes in the large intestine, thus increasing the volume of intestinal contents and evacuation pressure.
Emodin contributes to the plant's laxative effect by activating the smooth muscle cells of the large intestine to relieve constipation.
Papaya
Thanks to its laxative and detoxifying properties, papaya can help us to purify ourselves of toxins and residues that accumulate in the intestine, in order to improve its functioning.
Aloe ferox
More commonly known as "bitter aloe", Aloe Ferox is mainly used as a safe and effective natural laxative. Several studies have shown that Aloe Ferox improves intestinal motility and increases fecal volume. A 2011 study found Aloe Ferox to be an effective remedy for constipation. It has also been associated with improving symptoms of cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegeneration and diabetes. A 2012 study revealed Aloe Ferox's effectiveness in treating gastrointestinal parasites, which can affect digestion if left untreated. Researchers found that the plant has the potential to be used as an anthelmintic or antiparasitic drug.
Cardamom
Cardamom is used for digestive problems, including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), intestinal gas, constipation, liver and gallbladder disorders and loss of appetite. Cardamom contains chemicals that appear to treat stomach and intestinal spasms and gas, and increase the movement of food through the intestine.
Buckthorn
Rhamnus Frangula, commonly known as frangula bark, has a long history of medicinal use. But research is catching up on its effectiveness for digestive problems. The EMA recently reviewed 10 years of research on the efficacy of frangula bark in combination with other laxatives in a detailed report on frangula bark. In this assessment, the EMA also took into account expert opinions and clinical experience. The report concluded that frangula bark is safe and effective for constipation on the basis of well-established evidence.
